PATRIMOINE RELIGIEUX DE LEVIE
The church San Nicolao (1589) was in the Middle Ages a chapel with a single nave finished by an apse. This church has been reworked and enlarged so many times that today it’s impossible to date the monument.
The bell tower : Until 1870, there was no bell tower. The mayor of Levie, Jacques-Alphonse de Peretti decided to build it. The builders came from Italy and started a fashion in Levie : the openings in the form of trefoils which are found on mausoleums of the same period.
The romanesque chapel of St Laurent was destroyed in 1914 and a new chapel was constructed a few meters away (1914-1916) with the blocks of the old building. It is interesting to note that the situation is not ordinary : an example of the christianization of a site occupied since the prehistory. A pilgrimage to Saint Laurent takes place every year on August 9th.
